The problem
Parents looking for screen-free activities have plenty of maze books to choose from, and most of them are hard to judge before buying: inconsistent difficulty, cramped pages, and solutions that don't always match the puzzle. We wanted a line for kids ages 4 to 8 that a parent could trust at a glance, and could try for free before spending anything.
It was also a second test of the approach behind Clear Print Press: could the same print pipeline carry a new audience, with a new look, without starting over?
What we built
Doodle Acorn Press, a maze-book imprint, produced by a pipeline that treats every book as a build.
- A maze engine with proofs. Seeded generators build "perfect" mazes, with exactly one route, inside shapes from circles and stars to acorns, pumpkins, and haunted houses. A solver verifies each one, and difficulty is banded by counting decision points, across four levels: Acorn, Sprout, Sapling, and Oak. A whole book is dealt from a single seed, so it can be rebuilt exactly.
- Print-ready interiors and covers. Pages are laid out with vector mazes, story prompts ("Help the fox find her den."), and illustrated labels. A cover builder renders the full press-ready wrap from real mazes.
- A verification suite that blocks bad books. Every maze is re-verified, every puzzle is proven identical to its solution thumbnail, every "solution on page N" reference has to resolve, and margins, font embedding, stroke weights, and image resolution are all checked. A fingerprint test fails the build if a code change alters any printed page of a published book. Nearly 200 tests in all.
- AI where it fits, and only there. Line-art illustrations and cover art come from image generation, with a content-safety review that sent images back for another pass. The mazes, solutions, layout, and checks are all deterministic code.
- A site and a free sample. A static site with a seasonal Halloween mode, and a free 12-page sampler of real mazes delivered through an automated email flow.
